We are pleased to announce the details of the Aetna Freshman English Writing
Prize competition for excellent nonfiction. Entries written by students enrolled
during either fall 2006 or spring 2007 in UConn Freshman English (104, 110,
111, or 250) or in the Early College Experience Program in English are automatically
eligible for consideration for all prizes.
Each campus or school of the first prize winners receives $100 in the names
of the winning student’s instructors to assist student publications
PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSION
Each instructor should submit one student essay from each section
he or she teaches.
INSTRUCTORS should inform students that they would like
to nominate the student’s work for an Aetna Freshman Writing Prize.
INSTRUCTORS should give an official entry form to
the student who wants to submit to the contest.
STUDENT AUTHORS of an instructor-chosen essay should
complete the official entry form
submit one clean copy of their work to the instructor
Student/instructor name and course identifiers must be removed from
the essay
If the essay quotes or responds to an external source (a novel, a
work in an anthology, an essay from the required course text, etc.)
a complete works cited page (MLA style) must be included and proper
and accurate internal parenthetical documentation must be used
INSTRUCTORS should make four copies of the student
essay and four copies of the assignment for which the essay was
written. Also, the instructor should retain a disk copy of
the student’s essay and assignment in the event their student wins
the Aetna award.
INSTRUCTORS should attach the official entry form to
the 4 copies of the student essay (each with a copy of the assignment attached)
and submit the completed entry to the Freshman English
Office (CLAS 162); University of Connecticut; 215 Glenbrook Road,
U-4025; Storrs, CT 06269-4025.
To be considered for a prize, essays submitted by an
instructor must include:
ONE copy of the writing prize ENTRY FORM completed by the student
FOUR (4) copies of the ASSIGNMENT for which the essay was written
FOUR (4) copies of the STUDENT ESSAY entry
One assignment sheet should be stapled to the top of each essay copy
Student/instructor name and course identifiers must be removed from
the essay and assignment sheet
Essays that quote or respond to an external source must include a works
cited page and use proper and accurate internal parenthetical documentation (MLA
style)
The FINAL DEADLINE for receipt of all fall and spring
submissions is JUNE 15, 2007
