How Transfer Students Can

Request a Waiver for English 110/111

The Freshman English office at the University of Connecticut grants waiver requests to students who have done a comparable amount of work—i.e., equal in both quality and quantity to the requirements of UConn’s 110 or 111—at another accredited institution.  To determine a student’s waiver eligibility, the Freshman English office requests the following from the student:

 1.      A current transcript (unofficial is acceptable).

 2.      A Transfer Credit Evaluation, available on PeopleSoft or from the Admission’s office.

 3.      Samples of the student’s writing.  These samples should be thesis-driven, provide extensive, detailed analysis and discussion of text(s), and present textual evidence following the guidelines of any major citation style (APA, MLA, CMS).  Individual examples of student work should be at least five double-spaced pages in length.

Upon receipt of this information, one of the Co-Directors of Freshman English—Drs. Thomas Recchio or Sarah Winter—will review your material.  Should you be granted a waiver, the information will be processed via PeopleSoft through the Freshman English office.  Waivers are usually reviewed weekly during the semester, but less frequently during summer and winter break.

You may deliver your waiver application to the Freshman English office in person, or you can submit by fax or mail.  At this time, we do not accept e-mail submissions.
