English Graduate Handbook: Course Requirements
ENGLISH GRADUATE COURSE INFORMATION
A Graduate Course Schedule is published twice a year approximately two to three weeks before registration for graduate students. Students may pick one up in the Graduate Office. Entry into graduate courses requires written consent of the instructor and the Major Advisor.
300-level Courses :
Courses numbered 300-399 are open to all graduate students. These courses require papers and a final exam; course enrollment is limited to ten students. Courses at this level are designed to form the foundation of the graduate course work, and students, particularly M.A. candidates who wish to enter the Ph.D. program, are encouraged to take a variety of courses and instructors.
398 Special Readings :
Special Readings (English 398) is a non-credit course for which M. A. students register in cases where the regular program of course work has been interrupted and the student is not otherwise registered.

Thesis Preparation (English 399) is a non-credit course open only to students preparing an M. A. thesis who have completed course work.
400 Independent Study :
A student may request a faculty member to direct a course of independent study (English 400) in subject matter not covered by regular course offerings. M.A. students who wish to enter the Ph.D. program are discouraged, but not prohibited, from doing independent study. Credit for independent study is usually the same as credit for a regularly scheduled course, but it may vary at the instructor's discretion.
