This position assists in the organization, formatting and production of the journal. Typical responsibilities include: checking facts and citations within accepted essays using on-line databases; collaborating with artists and others regarding type and amount of graphic, illustrative and/or photographic support appropriate to support written copy; editing and proofreading articles for grammar, clarity and accuracy; preparing booklets or brochures; participating in special projects; creating PDF documents for submission to the printer; creating spread-sheets, access data bases and other computer documents; responding to mail, contacting journal evaluators and authors, answering inquiries; processing claims and subscription requests; manages MELUS office and workflow for all projects; supervising student workers and performing related duties. Preferred Qualifications: MA or PhD in English, Journalism, Communications, or Related Field; familiarity with research databases: MLA, World Cat, EBSCO, etc; thorough knowledge of MLA style; background in editing of academic publications; familiarity with multiethnic literature of the US or American Literature; familiarity with HTML or other Web Design Programs; knowledge of programs used for editing, formatting, graphic design and layout of journals such as Quark, InDesign, Word, Access, Excel, Photoshop or Adobe Acrobat; good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines, carry assignments through to completion, and take initiative; ability to expand knowledge of computer skills as needed for journal’s growth. Assistant Professor & Writing Coordinator - Torrington Campus Revised 4/7/2008 The University of Connecticut, Torrington Campus, announces a search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English to serve as Writing Coordinator beginning in the fall of 2008. Qualified candidates must have administrative experience relating to Freshman English courses, tutor training and tutorial services for writing across the curriculum, and support for the teaching of writing intensive courses. The successful candidate will join a cohort of Writing Directors from UConn’s regional campuses in working closely with the Freshman English Program and the Writing Center at the main campus at Storrs. Teaching responsibility is one course per semester. Candidates must have a completed Ph.D. at the time of appointment, preferably in Rhetoric and Composition. Preference will be given to candidates with additional expertise in contemporary American Literature. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in English with a specialty in African American literature. The successful candidate will teach upper-division and graduate classes in African American Literature and related areas, and on occasion will teach survey and general education courses for the English Department. The candidate will also be expected to develop interdisciplinary courses for the Institute for African American Studies. Teaching load is two courses per year for the English Department and two courses per year for the Institute. Responsibilities will also include the advising and mentoring of students. Promotion and tenure will be decided by the English Department in consultation with the Institute.
