Career Opportunities for English Majors: Education

There are really only three things that you need to know if you want to be a teacher of English at the middle or high school level.

  1. Students can apply to the Integrated Bachelor's/Master's (IB/M) program by January 15 of their sophomore year (students must have 54 credits by the end of their sophomore year) or to the Teacher Certification Program for College Graduates (TCPCG) after having completed an undergraduate degree in English (students apply by December 1 of senior year). Students who plan to apply in their sophomore year complete the University's General Education requirements and get started on 200's level English courses during their freshman and sophomore years. Students planning to apply after completing their undergraduate degree in English, follow all requirements for the English major (also take HIST 131 OR HIST 132).
  1. Students can get a detailed description of the IB/M program leading to certification in English, including prerequisites and requirements online: www.education.uconn.edu/students/advising/ . TCPCG information is also online: www.education.uconn.edu/departments/teachered/TCPCG.cfm .
  1. All students contemplating application to the Neag School of Education should see the English Education faculty advisor, Wendy Glenn ( wendy.glenn@uconn.edu ), or academic advisor, Ann Traynor ( ann.traynor@uconn.edu ), early in their academic careers. This admonition applies to both those applying as undergraduates and those applying as post-baccalaureates. They can advise students on which English courses to take.

Faculty in the School of Education invite you to stop by to discuss the nature of the Integrated Bachelor's/Master's Program.  We are extremely proud of the students in our program and the teachers they become.  We would welcome the opportunity to tell you more about the interesting and exciting work that is going on in the Gentry Building and in Connecticut's public schools.
