Tom Deans

Director, University Writing Center

Tom Deans is a Professor of English and the Director of the University Writing Center at UConn, Storrs. Deans’ current research includes:

  • Oxford Guides to Writing in the Disciplines (series editor)
  • writing center theory and practice
  • writing assessment
  • representations of writers in literary and religious texts

In his own words,

“I came to UConn in 2005 to direct the University Writing Center and serve as a faculty member in English. I have longstanding interests in writing across the disciplines, university-community partnerships, composition theory, writing centers, writing assessment, prose style, writing in STEM, early modern literature, and representations of writers in literary and sacred texts. In recent years I’ve been series editor for the Oxford Brief Guides to Writing in the Disciplines. One thread that weaves through most of this work is an emphasis on writing as a mode of social action.”
